RFID Chip – Electronic chips carrying the data that is in the RFID tags
RFID Chip
RFID Chip – The electronic chip of an RFID tag, is that part of the RFID tag that contains the digital data. This data can be read with a compatible reader. Most chips used are read-only chips. But some electronic chips used in RFID tags, can also receive and store new data, they can be written. As an introduction to Radio Frequency Identification, I want to refer you to Wikipedia.org,where you will be able to find article with the same name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio-frequency_identification .
The next two web-pages I to mention are also web-pages that can be found on Wikipedia.org. They deal with the fact that electronic chips have become so small that they are being implanted in animals and in humans, in the form of RFID tags. These two articles give us an image of the implantation of RFID tags. You can find these articles here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchip_implant_%28human%29 , and also here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchip_implant_%28animal%29 .
The use of RFID electronic chips is being put into perspective in an article called “RFID tags: Big Brother in small packages”. You can find this article on Cnet.com. This can be found here: http://news.cnet.com/2010-1069-980325.html .
If you would need to block RFID tags from being read, then you will be able to find an explanation on how to do that on Instructables.com. Basically you need to find a means to block the radio waves from reaching the chips antenna, so it is unable to receive and transmit data. An example of how this can be done, can be found at the following web-pages: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-blockkill-RFID-chips/ .
Alex Jones, pulls our attention to an other possible problem that could arise from the use of RFID tags. Since some RFID tags can be written, data can be sent to them and saved. This would mean that also computer like viruses could be contained in the RFID electronic chips. The web-page where this is explained can be found here: http://www.infowars.com/rfid-chip-implanted-into-man-gets-computer-virus/ .
At PreCentral.net and the PreCentral forum, you will be able to read a forum thread and a small article that mentions how to transfer the RFID electronic chip from your bus or train pass, into your cellphone. This application serves as an example how people adjust RFID technology to their own needs. And shows engineers how RFID could be used in future applications in the public transport sector. The article can be found here: http://www.precentral.net/rfid-chip-transplanted-pre-works-4 .The forum thread can be found here: http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/252869-embedded-rfid-transit-chip-my-pre.html .
In DigitalJournal.com it is explained how Germany is to Introduce RFID electronic chip cards, for personal identification, in 2010. Some German officials have expressed their fear of a possible abuse, in a worst case scenario by terrorists. This article can be found here: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/284196 .
